East Tennessee Major Cities
Knoxville Tennessee. The region’s largest city and largely regarded as its cultural and commercial center, Knoxville is host to an impressive body of attractions and is close to many more. Within the city are the highly regarded Knoxville Museum of Arts, The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Knoxville Zoo, and The University of Tennessee. Within short distances are the American Museum of Science and Energy and Dollywood and other Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge attractions. The crown jewel of the region, the Great Smoky Mountains, is less than an hour away.
Best Small City to Live. Metropolitan Knoxville was named in the Millenium edition of the Places Rated Alamanac (IDG Books worldwide) as the best place to live in the United States and Canada among cities with populations of fewer than one million. It’s highest ranked amenities were cost of living, job opportunities, education, health care and recreation. Its tax burden is among the lowest in the U.S., partly due to the lack of a state income tax. Knoxville’s moderate, four-season climate is also a major factor in it’s liveability.
Great Place to Buy. Knoxville was cited in Realty Times as a “truly an exceptional buyer's market” and touted for its “enviably low cost of living.”
Great Place to Start a Business. The greater Knoxville area is among the top ten places in the U.S to do business, according to Expansion Magazine, which also ranked the city as among the top 15 hottest cities. In 2004, Forbes magazine also ranked Knoxville in the top 15 for best places for business and careers. A well-educated professional workforce is supported by the University of Tennessee, the Tennessee Valley Authority, which is headquartered here, and the large energy, environmental, and technology network of U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its complex of associated government facilities and private firms. The University of Tennessee is a significant employer and business partner, and its College of Business Administration is ranked number five in the U.S. by the Wall Street Journal. High profile commercial enterprises in the area include Clayton Homes, Ruby Tuesday, Sea Ray Boats, and Scripps Networks (Home and Garden Television, the Food Network), and Regal Cinemas, and De Royal Industries.

Recreational and Outdoor Life
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park enchants visitors with the most breathtaking mountain vistas in the Eastern United States and the heritage of Appalachian folkways preserved among the park’s hazy and blue-hued mountain ridges, boulder-strewn rivers and streams, and rich diversity of wildlife. The most visited of U.S. national parks, it boasts nearly a thousand miles of trails, many through old growth forests, straddling ridgetops, or along streams and waterfalls.
